Breast Care International

As a country, Ghana is currently facing a real danger of the scourge of cancer. Available statistics issued by Global Cancer Observatory, an affiliate of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) International Agency for Research in Cancer indicate that in 2022 the total number of cancer cases in Ghana was 27,385 with 17,944 deaths.

Breast Care International (BCI) a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) was founded in 2002 by Dr. (Mrs.) Beatrice Wiafe Addai, an internationally recognized and multiple-award-winning breast cancer specialist, working primarily in Ghana and Africa. BCI has an extensive body of work in creating massive awareness of cancer in the country through innovative programmes; such as Community Outreach, BCI Ghana Walk for the Cure – Nationwide Flagship Breast Cancer Campaign, Oncology Training for Community-Based Doctors, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners; donation of essential medicines and equipment and consumables; Nurse/Peer Navigation Training; Research and Survivorship.

Ghana like many other developing nations, faces a rising incidence of cancer, placing a severe strain on existing healthcare infrastructure. The lack of a dedicated facility for cancer education, prevention, screening diagnosis, treatment, training and research exacerbates the challenges faced by patients and healthcare professionals. To complement the immense body of work that BCI has done over the years; there is a compelling case for the establishment of a stand-alone – one stop Comprehensive Cancer Centre of Excellence to address the growing burden of the disease.

Above findings were established in the Lancet Oncology Commission’s Report on Sub Saharan Africa, in collaboration with the Global Health Catalyst Summit, that was officially launched in Ghana in May 2022, hosted by Breast Care International (BCI).
In this regard, BCI with the collaborative effort from the Global Health Catalyst Summit, USA and the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation has taken the bold initiative to establish an estimated $100 Million Comprehensive Cancer Centre of Excellence (CCCoE), to be executed in phases. This world-class facility is to be strategically located at Kwaso near Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, in reflection of its central geographical setting in the country. The Centre would fill the current national gap of the absence of a stand-alone comprehensive cancer center of excellence to address the growing burden of a ravaging disease.
